Nickle Name Meaning
English: variant of Nichol. Variant of German Nickel.
English and Scottish: From the northern Middle English personal name Nicol or its Gaelic equivalent.
Dutch and German: From a pet form of Nick, a short form of the personal name Nikolaus.
English and Dutch: From the personal name (Greek Nikolaos, from nikan ‘to conquer’ + laos ‘people’). Forms with -ch- are due to hypercorrection. The name in various vernacular forms was popular among Christians throughout Europe in the Middle Ages, largely as a result of the fame of a 4th-century Lycian bishop, about whom a large number of legends grew up, and who was venerated in the Orthodox Church as well as the Catholic. In English-speaking countries, this surname is also found as an Americanized form of various Greek surnames such as Papanikolaou ‘(son of) Nicholas the priest’ and patronymics such as Nikolopoulos.
Family Motto: ‘Fide Sed Cui Vide’ (Have confidence but be careful in whom you confide)
Family Crest:
The Nickle Family Tartan, as residence of County Tyrone:
One of a series of Irish District tartans designed by Polly Wittering of the House of Edgar. These are not ‘officially sanctioned’ District tartans but have apparently proved popular and no doubt in time will be accepted as genuine District rather than Fashion tartans. Designed for Macnaughtons of Pitlochry as a collection of trade tartans.
