Miller Name Meaning and History

English and Scottish: occupational name for a miller. The standard modern vocabulary word represents the northern Middle English term, an agent derivative of mille ‘mill’, reinforced by Old Norse mylnari (see Milner). In southern, western, and central England Millward (literally, ‘mill keeper’) was the usual term. adm The American surname has absorbed many cognate surnames from other European languages, for example French Meunier, Dumoulin, Demoulins, and Moulin; German Mueller; Dutch Molenaar; Italian Molinaro; Spanish Molinero; Hungarian Molnár; Slavic Mlinar, etc.

Milner Name Meaning and History

Northern English (mainly Yorkshire) and Scottish: variant of Miller, retaining the -n- of the Middle English word, which was a result of Scandinavian linguistic influence, as in Old Norse mylnari.

Millward Name Meaning and History

English (chiefly West Midlands): occupational name for someone in charge of a mill, from Old English mylen ‘mill’ + weard ‘guardian’. In southern England and the West Midlands this was a standard medieval term for a miller.

Meunier Name Meaning and History

French: occupational name for a miller, meunier (Old French mounier, from an agent derivative of Latin molina ‘mill’).

 

 

Mueller Name Meaning and History

German (Müller) and Jewish (Ashkenazic): occupational name for a miller, Middle High German müller, German Müller. In Germany Müller, Mueller is the most frequent of all surnames; in the U.S. it is often changed to Miller.
